On Sunday, India’s Congress party chief Rahul Gandhi was received by Dr. Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, at his office. It was the final day of his visit to the UAE.

In 1981, Indira Gandhi his grandmother and then Prime Minister of India visited the UAE. On Thursday,  after 37 years the Nehru-Gandhi scion visited the UAE, had received a huge welcome in Dubai. Mr. Gandhi’s main public event was addressed to a packed Dubai International Cricket Stadium. He also had meetings with the UAE leaders, professionals, Indian Workers, and business leaders. Rahul Gandhi flew back to New Delhi on an Emirates flight at 3.10 pm on Sunday.

According to the reports, Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah and Shaikh Abdullah bin Salem bin Sultan Al Qasimi, Deputy Ruler of Sharjah, were also present at Gandhi’s meeting with Shaikh Sultan.

The historical relations between the UAE and the Republic of India, the promotion of bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed in the meeting.  The meeting also touched upon strengthening cultural and social communication between the two nation.

Gandhi praised the scientific, educational and cultural renaissance in the Emirate of Sharjah. Dr. Shaikh Sultan presented his guest with a number of his literary and cultural publications. Many other Indian Officials and shaikhs attended the meeting, sources said.

Mr. Gandhi also had private meetings with prominent members of the Indian community. On Saturday, at a press conference, Mr. Gandhi said “I am taking back with me the spirit of our community, love, and affection of the UAE and the idea that India’s diaspora needs to be utilised. I am also taking back the idea of tolerance, an Indian idea that has been attacked in our own country.”
